1980s

The 1980s were calmer. He had left New York and with no large studio began working in a smaller format, engaging with images out the window or as imagined from his reading. He also embarked on a series of women on balconies, enjoying the visual game of a figure seen through balcony railings. As his health failed, maybe he too was withdrawing, surveying his life and the world from a safe distance. Towards the end of the decade he began studying Chinese, realizing an old interest in a language dependent on the play between visual and abstract meaning.
